Regent

Variety Regent

Regent is a red grape variety and belongs to the fungal resistance varieties. The variety is especially tolerant against Peronospora (downy mildew). Therefore between 60 and 80 percent of plant protection is needed.

Regent is new variety (1967 crossing between Diana (Silvaner x Müller-Thurgau) and Chambourcin) but did not receive permission until 1995 in Germany and 1996 in Europe. The breeding goes back to Gerhardt Alleweldt and was developed at the institute for grape breeding Geilweilerhof.

The variety belongs (as of 2008) to the most important fungal resistance quality varieties in the world and produces vividly colored, powerful red wines. In Germany 2.1 percent are cultivated with Regent and is thus the leading country.
